YARN WITH A STORY TO TELL
This beautiful light grey yarn is a unique collaboration between Dylan the Gotland sheep and Clarissa the Angora goat. Dylan's fleece is a lustrous grey, and this fine 2 ply yarn retains that shine with an added halo from Clarissa's mohair fibre.
Dylan is our oldest Gotland boy with a very sweet nature and incredibly waggy tail. He loves a quiet, one-to-one fuss and a digestive biscuit! Clarissa was born at Buttercups Goat Sanctuary in Kent and is now around 15 years old. Her mother came to the sanctuary with a group of appallingly cared for Angoras via the RSPCA. Clarissa is probably only half Angora as her coat is less dense and curly than the traditional Angora fleece, but no one knows for certain and she’s truly beautiful, whatever her parentage! We’re unfortunately unable to offer a foster home to Clarissa here in Nottinghamshire as we’re a long way north of the defined Kent catchment area for Buttercups, but they kindly offered us her fleece to blend with our sheep wool to make even more special speciality yarn which helps to promote both sheep and goat welfare.
Our high welfare artisan yarn is from a small mixed flock of sheep at our livestock sanctuary in Nottinghamshire UK. The boys were originally called The Hooligans because of their boisterous behaviour and unerring knack of seeking out trouble, and although the girls are generally better behaved, they also have their moments. And so Hooligan Yarns was born!
It’s essential for the welfare of sheep that they’re shorn at least once a year, but the fleece is often disposed of or given away for next to nothing. I liked the idea of producing a ‘single sheep’ yarn that promoted a high welfare message to support the charity. Our undyed yarn is machine spun in UK mills and individually gift packaged, with the name and quirks of each sheep provided as a story with each order.
Limited quantities are available owing to the size of flock – all current stock shown here, with updates twice yearly following the spring and autumn shearings.
Yarn sales go directly to support our charity Manor Farm Charitable Trust which offers lifelong sanctuary for livestock in need. UK Registered Charity No. 1173761.
