YARN WITH A STORY TO TELL
Dumpy came to us by way of a social media rescue campaign on Facebook! He was one of a group of young Texel sheep being sold for slaughter, but the daughter of the farmer taking him to market had a very soft spot for him. Dumpy had always been extraordinarily friendly despite not being bottle fed, and would always come up for cuddles in the field. The farmer’s daughter is a member of a livestock forum where I’m also a member, and when she put out a plea to save Dumpy, I was immediately tagged by a friend to come to the rescue.
You really couldn’t meet a sweeter sheep – Dumpy is such a happy and endearing little chap who comes bobbling up the gate to get a first mouthful from the feed bucket ahead of the rest. Dumpy’s Texel yarn has been long awaited by all his new Instagram followers – it’s a lovely oatmeal colour and will give fantastic stitch definition to outer garments, cushions and blankets.
Our high welfare artisan yarn is from a small mixed flock of sheep in Nottinghamshire UK known as The Hooligans. The boys were originally called The Hooligans because of their boisterous behaviour and unerring knack of seeking out trouble, and although the girls are generally better behaved, they also have their moments. And so Hooligan Yarns was born!
It’s essential for the welfare of sheep that they’re shorn at least once a year, but the fleece is often disposed of or given away for next to nothing. I liked the idea of producing a ‘single sheep’ yarn that promoted a high welfare message. Our undyed yarn is machine spun in UK mills and individually gift packaged, with the name and quirks of each sheep provided as a story postcard or scroll with each order.
Limited quantities are available owing to the size of flock – all current stock shown here, with updates twice yearly following the spring and autumn shearings.
