YARN WITH A STORY TO TELL

This soft and densely textured Jacob/DorsetX alpaca blend yarn is from Boots, one of two ewes of this breed that we rescued from slaughter from our local farm park. Boots has very fetching knee high black markings on her front legs, hence the name! Her 2016 fleeces were abundant so I split them to have half blended with cream alpaca fibre, and half with black alpaca fibre. The cream alpaca blend has made a warm mid grey shade with lots of texture and character, while the black alpaca blend has the same fantastic texture but in a dark charcoal shade. Like her sister Dottie, Boots is an exceptionally friendly sheep, always gently coming up alongside you for a scratch and a head rub. She is perhaps more polite than her sister, always waiting till the other greedy sheep have shoved and pushed before coming up for her share of treats! After shearing, her body is a surprising mix of black, cream and brown splodges, and she always looks naked after losing such a full and springy fleece.

Our high welfare artisan yarn is from a small mixed flock of sheep in Nottinghamshire UK known as The Hooligans. The boys were originally called The Hooligans because of their boisterous behaviour and unerring knack of seeking out trouble, and although the girls are generally better behaved, they also have their moments. And so Hooligan Yarns was born!

It’s essential for the welfare of sheep that they’re shorn at least once a year, but the fleece is often disposed of or given away for next to nothing. I liked the idea of producing a ‘single sheep’ yarn that promoted a high welfare message. Our undyed yarn is machine spun in UK mills and individually gift bagged, with the name and quirks of each sheep provided as a story postcard with each order.

Limited quantities are available owing to the size of flock – all current stock shown here, with updates twice yearly following the spring and autumn shearings.
