YARN WITH A STORY TO TELL - PLEASE MESSAGE ME FOR INTERNATIONAL ORDERS
Back again by popular demand! This limited edition high lustre mid grey 2 ply yarn is a blend of the spring 2018 fleeces from Gordon and Gilbert. Gordon's strong grey Gotland curls combined with Gilbert's TeeswaterX long cream locks has resulted in a beautiful mid grey, lightweight yarn perfect for a special creative project. Winter 2017/2018 was really hard with dreadful weather, and both boys fleeces darkened a little under the onslaught so this batch of their combination yarn is a stronger pewter shade than previous batches. Gordon is a sweet boy who is slightly disabled through a birth defect to his neck. This means his head is permanently tilted to one side, giving him a quizzical air but not making him any less lovable! Gilbert is also disabled as he had a back injury as a lamb which means that his back legs stick out to the side when he runs, and his spine is a bit twisted. Imperfect of stature, but perfectly beautiful good-natured boys who are great characters in our little motley flock of assorted breeds.
Our high welfare artisan yarn is from a small mixed flock of sheep at our livestock sanctuary in Nottinghamshire UK. The boys were originally called The Hooligans because of their boisterous behaviour and unerring knack of seeking out trouble, and although the girls are generally better behaved, they also have their moments. And so Hooligan Yarns was born!
It’s essential for the welfare of sheep that they’re shorn at least once a year, but the fleece is often disposed of or given away for next to nothing. I liked the idea of producing a ‘single sheep’ yarn that promoted a high welfare message to support the charity. Our undyed yarn is machine spun in UK mills and individually gift packaged, with the name and quirks of each sheep provided as a story with each order.
Limited quantities are available owing to the size of flock – all current stock shown here, with updates twice yearly following the spring and autumn shearings.
Yarn sales go directly to support our charity Manor Farm Charitable Trust which offers lifelong sanctuary for livestock in need. UK Registered Charity No. 1173761.
